How to use Claude Skills to make good work repeatable

A Skill packages the way your team does a task so Claude can follow it every time. Here is how to think about Skills, what makes a good one, and how to roll them out safely.

By the Halden editorial team

The idea

A Skill is a reusable instruction pack.

A Skill is a bundle of instructions, and sometimes scripts and reference files, that Claude can load when a task calls for it. Instead of re-explaining your house style or your reporting steps in every chat, you write them down once and let Claude apply them consistently.

That makes Skills a good fit for work that is frequent, has a clear definition of good, and is currently done differently by different people.

Choose well

The best first Skills are small and frequent.

Look for tasks where people repeat the same explanation: formatting a weekly report, drafting a client brief, reviewing a document against a checklist, or preparing meeting notes in a standard shape.

  • Pick a task with a clear input and output.
  • Write down what a strong result looks like, with one or two examples.
  • List what the Skill must never do, such as inventing figures or sharing confidential data.

Write it like a procedure

Be specific about steps, tone and checks.

A strong Skill reads like onboarding notes for a capable new colleague: purpose, steps in order, the standards to apply, and how to handle exceptions. Include the review step, for example asking Claude to list assumptions and anything it could not verify.

Keep the instructions short enough to maintain. If a Skill grows long, split it into two.

Roll it out safely

Test, own and review.

Run the Skill on real examples and compare the output with what your best person would produce. Name an owner, keep a version note, and review it when the process or the tool changes.

Check your organization's guidance on where Skills may be stored and shared, and remember that a Skill is only as safe as the instructions and files inside it. For current steps and options, follow Anthropic's documentation.
